One week into sharing the news of 81 Huron with the rest of the city, together we have raised $518,398 — 86% of the way to our $600,000 goal. We need to meet this goal by November 15. A major donor has already moved us dramatically closer to the goal, seeing the broad community support for this project.

What will the funds go towards?

These funds go directly toward the capital work needed to care for the building responsibly — giving her some TLC, planning for repairs and improvements, and creating residential units with rents on par with cooperative housing in the downtown core.

One of the most beautiful parts of this past week has been hearing people’s reactions.

From people in Chinatown, we’ve heard so much joy and hope about what it could mean to keep this building in community hands. We’ve also heard grief, about spaces already lost because this alternative path did not exist.

And from people outside Chinatown, we’ve heard something else that feels really special: that this project is making people talk to their neighbours and communities about what they could build together — and whether something like this might be possible where they live too.

That’s the kind of ripple effect we want Chinatown’s community ownership to have.
