See What Is

View full screen in a Lightbox.

What we see is not what is. We see a slice, not the field, and mistake it for the whole.

I had a birthday last week. At my birthday dinner, a family member asked me the question no one prepares for:

“From all of your life and work, what is the one piece of advice you would share?”

The table went quiet. So did I.

I’ve lived a life that holds a lot. Years underwater on a nuclear submarine. Decades inside organizations trying to change. A decade and a half on the inner leader journey. A book about perception. One piece?

Here is what came out:

What we see is not what is.

We see what our beliefs, judgments, and past experience select and interpret—a slice, not the field. Yet from within that slice, it feels like everything.

Every stalled transformation I have witnessed, every conflict between good people: two partial views, each mistaken for the whole.

The advice beneath the advice:

Everything beyond what we see is still there.

We can learn to see what is.

That is the invitation at the heart of The Perception Miracle.
