This past week, Christopher Nolan released a film with the same name as our monthly Odyssey session. I didn’t plan it that way, but I’ve been listening to the people who made the film describe what it took.

The set that stood in for Ithaca sat a thousand feet up a hill. No road could be built, and vehicles couldn't reach it. Every morning, two hundred fifty people walked a steep and treacherous path before the day’s work began.

Nolan walked it too. His producer told him that if he was going to ask everyone else to climb the hill, he had better be climbing it with them.

Odyssey asks the same of us. There is no road up. The seeing is the practice, and I walk it with you.

The actors dreaded the climb at first. By the end, they called it the best way to begin the day. The hill never changed. What it meant changed.

The event remained the same. The interpretation moved, and the whole day moved with it.

That is the work we do in Odyssey.

Matt Damon said it this way, “Every single person here could be working on an easier movie for more money.”

You could spend this hour somewhere easier too. Choose the hill. You may discover there's so much more to see.
