The talent acquisition landscape has changed post-pandemic; the application processes that most people were used to are not the same anymore. Yet the same problem exists - a paradox, whereby people are unemployed or underemployed but companies still can’t fill vacant posts.

ATS and new streamlined job application processes are just a couple of challenges that applicants encounter in the new era of economy. Ironically, they are the same challenges that employers face in filling roles.

We still gotta keep up with the changing times, right? So, as we’re halfway through the year, read these tips to help you ease the challenges of job application that persist in 2026.

Technology Job Application Process: Your Essential Guide

Job Application Process

1. Job Search

tl;dr: Search in job sites - use keywords (e.g. software developer, AI developer, product owner); refine search or look at tags; Ask around professional network & friends; Visit company websites

AI, ATS, and Human Resources Software have given birth to more job search websites and human resource outsourcing companies. It’s easier to look for jobs as they are just at the tip of your fingers - using your smart phones and computers.

The challenge is the organizing part. Which ones match your skills? Which ones are you actually looking for?

Instead of doom-scrolling across the list of jobs, you can use keywords for the initial search.

Just type in the job name or description you’re looking for, e.g. software developer, product owner, AI developer.

You can also refine the search by salary, location, remote or onsite, full-time, part-time, etc.

On Aspeeria, you may see tags (e.g. full-time, location, remote, etc.) depending on how the job ad was originally posted. You can also save jobs for future viewing and preparation. More on that later, on the Application topic.

Aside from going through job sites and ATS, also ask friends or tap onto professional network for recommendations or referrals. Some employers do appreciate it.

Your network is a great source of information about company culture, work flexibility, and benefits. You’ll even learn about how they like it there, company restructuring, remote work policy, and more.

Even if you do not know anyone from a company, send a direct message to a recruiter on LinkedIN. Many employers also post on their websites' Careers page and social media.

2. Application

tl;dr: Make a short list of job posts; Use Aspeeria to save jobs and track progress; prepare tailored resume & cover letter, update online portfolio, etc.

After considering the companies and job posts, make a list of those and begin to prepare for the application phase. Either use a word processing app, notes app, or the Aspeeria web app.

Aspeeria makes it easy for you to save jobs and track progress of jobs that you’re applying for.

You can save the job from the job summary page that is generated by AI. AI helps you prepare for the job application and you can manually add notes for personal reference.

Once you’ve checked the list and are ready to apply, ensure that you’ve tailored your resume & cover letter to the job post, updated your online profile & online portfolio (if you have it), and prepared other items that the company requires to submit.

3. First Screening

tl;dr: Tailor resumes for each application and make them ATS-friendly. Use a clean, single-column layout free from fluff, tables, and text boxes.

With thousands of applicants looking for jobs everyday, Human Resource (HR) outsourcing companies, HR and People Operations opted to use HR software and applicant tracking systems (ATS).

It is important to understand how an ATS works so you can land the job you want.

Why do companies use ATS?

This is their first step of filtering out applications. ATS can be used to scan & parse applications, filter them and rank candidates according to the specific skills, degrees, certifications, or keywords that the companies are looking for.

Some recruiters read resumes but some employers don’t. Candidates get filtered out before a recruiter reads their resume, even if they might be a good match.

According to Harvard Business School’s report, this is because of automation and how the systems are designed.

As job applicants, you need to:

  • Tailor your resume for each job application to specify keywords, related keywords, and details according to what the job post and recruiter are looking for.

  • Use a clean, single-column layout to make sure that the ATS can parse your resume. Resumes with too fancy or complicated formatting - tables and text boxes - may be filtered out.

ℹ️ ATS can be used to scan candidates who have indicated on their resume the specific skills, degrees, certifications, or keywords that the employers are looking for.

4. Interview

tl;dr: Prepare for the interview and application process with Aspeeria. Send a thank-you email to the recruiter within 24 hours (sample below).

When you get shortlisted, a Talent Acquisition Specialist (Recruiter) or the Hiring Manager may reach out to you for an initial interview.

This is when the classic, “Tell me something about yourself” comes up , so always prepare to answer this question.

Watch these helpful tips on how to face this question by Linda Raynier.

Or use Aspeeria to get an effective guide in preparing for an application.

It gives you possible questions that may come up during the interview, tells you what documents you need to prepare, and also the hard and soft skills that the job usually requires.

If you're highly interested in that job, had a good interview experience, or have some questions, it will be helpful to send a thank-you email within 24 to 48 hours from your interview.

Experts from Harvard Business Review share how to send a follow up or thank-you email to a Recruiter:

Dear [name of Hiring Manager],

Thank you so much for your time yesterday and for giving me the chance to share my interest and qualifications for [job]. I particularly enjoyed learning about how your company has a training program for new employees that gives them an overview of different units and career paths.

I look forward to hearing from you.

The recruiter or Hiring Manager may get back fast or may take a while. Remember that they're also interviewing other applicants.

5. Assessment

tl;dr: We may be assessed on job knowledge, coding skills, cognitive ability - thought process, personality, soft skills, and EQ

The same goes with assessments. Nowadays, applicants could go through an application process that takes 1 to 3 months, depending on the company’s hiring process and needs.

In Technology, applicants usually undergo tests on job knowledge, coding skills, cognitive ability - thought process, personality, soft skills, and emotional intelligence.

Employers give specific test instructions and candidates need to submit the assessment within a deadline.

After the assessment, the Hiring Manager will analyze the results.

6. Job Offer

When you receive the job offer, it is important to know your three options:

  1. Immediately accept the offer;

  2. Immediately decline it;

  3. Negotiate

Sometimes you might feel compelled to immediately accept an offer when it is handed to you. You've gone through the whole process and worked hard for it anyway.

But it’s best to evaluate the job offer carefully if it’s aligned with your needs and goals. Also understand the position and responsibilities tied with it.

You may also feel the need to negotiate before accepting the job offer. Here’s a useful blog from JobstreetPH on negotiating salary in a job offer.
