tl;dr: The Engineering Manager delves deep into the idea of where the future engineers will come from. The old “programmer’s path” - learning by doing - is being replaced with AI doing much of the skills that junior engineers used to learn along the way. Learn the three possible futures and what you can do as a manager, senior engineer, or a fresh grad.

AI hiring tools show racial bias

tl;dr: “For many job postings, AI screening tools recommend white candidates at higher rates than Black and Asian candidates, new research shows. In job interviews, keep your backstory short

tl;dr: “When in doubt, aim to keep the situation part as short as possible. Aim for 2-3 sentences and 10-15 seconds, then move on to the task, action, and results. This allows you to allocate the bulk of time on what the problem was, why it mattered, what you did to solve it, and how much money you made for your company. Those are the juicy parts.”

tl;dr: “When a user receives a message from a large business, WhatsApp will automatically move that message to a new “Offers & Updates” folder after a set number of hours. The company said it is testing different durations, up to 24 hours, to move messages to a new folder.”

Anthropic says its AI models hacked 3 organizations during testing

tl;dr: “Anthropic said its artificial intelligence models hacked into three other organizations during testing, just days after ChatGPT maker OpenAI raised concerns over AI controls after it disclosed its rogue models hacked another company.

These incidents have highlighted the vulnerabilities in AI security and controls and raised questions over how AI can be safely kept under human control as the technology’s usage becomes more widespread globally.”

One Tech Tip: How to soothe thumb pain when texting and scrolling

tl;dr: “Do your hands hurt when you use your phone? All that texting and scrolling might be stressing out your fingers. The simplest way to ease this pain is to go touch grass — that is, limit phone time or take short breaks in between scrolling spurts. But that’s easier said than done. If a detox feels difficult, try to mix up postures, switch hands to type and use the index or other fingers.”
