Gemini app crosses one billion monthly users

TechCrunch

Google said its Gemini app passed one billion monthly active users, making it the fastest product in company history to reach that mark. Gemini had roughly 400 million monthly users at I/O 2025 and 900 million in May 2026. Google declined to break out how many of those users are paying subscribers.

Why it matters

It is the clearest evidence yet that Google's Android, Search and Workspace distribution can close a consumer gap it entered late, turning the assistant race into a fight over defaults rather than model quality alone.
