Claude Code extension 2.1.313 — tampered build carried an SSH backdoor
A modified Claude Code extension, version 2.1.313, planted an SSH backdoor on developer machines through the Cursor marketplace.
What is it?
Cursor published a security notice about a malicious build of the Anthropic.claude-code extension that it says was not developed by Anthropic. It was live in the Cursor marketplace for about 11 hours on 29 October, affecting at most 5,000 users.
How does it work?
The injected code adds an attacker SSH key labeled svc-telemetry to authorized_keys and opens a reverse SSH tunnel. It also installs a LaunchAgent (macOS) or a scheduled task (Windows) so the tunnel retries about every 60 seconds.
Why does it matter?
Uninstalling the extension does not remove the persistence or the SSH key, so affected developers must clean up by hand and rotate credentials. Cursor says the attacker server is now offline.
Who is it for?
Developers who use Claude Code in Cursor or other VS Code forks.

Mistral Large 4 open weights — Le Chonk lands on Hugging Face
Mistral's trillion-parameter flagship is now downloadable, with better agent and coding scores than the preview.
What is it?
Mistral AI released the weights of Mistral Large 4, nicknamed Le Chonk, three weeks after the API-only preview. It had three more weeks of reinforcement learning and scores 41% on Terminal-Bench 4.0, up from 28%.
How does it work?
It is a sparse mixture-of-experts with about 1T parameters, of which roughly 49B run per token. It reads text and images and handles up to 1M tokens, with FP8 and NVFP4 checkpoints and vLLM and SGLang recipes.
Why does it matter?
Security teams and regulated companies can run a frontier-class model on their own hardware instead of sending data to a US or Chinese API. The license is a modified MIT, free to commercialize except for Model-as-a-Service offerings.
Who is it for?
Self-hosting teams, security teams and European enterprises.

OpenAI's misalignment monitors — four layers watch training, Codex and Astra
OpenAI now runs a layered monitor over its own frontier models and over outside use of Astra-class models.
What is it?
OpenAI published a full description of how it watches its frontier models for misaligned behavior such as deception, unauthorized actions and gaming an evaluation. It was expanded after the Hugging Face incident.
How does it work?
Cheap screens come first: activation probes, then a model reviewer, then investigator agents, and for sensitive work a check of transcripts against network logs. Flagged training samples keep their RL reward, so models are not trained to hide misconduct.
Why does it matter?
Teams running Astra-class models through the Responses API are now inside this system, and can get webhook alerts to their own security team. The post also admits limits, such as paging being off for internal Codex traffic.
Who is it for?
Security teams and developers running agents on OpenAI's API.

OpenAI Model Spec update — five core values, and the model is now 'GPT'
OpenAI rewrote its public rulebook for model behavior around five values instead of a long list of rules.
What is it?
The Model Spec is OpenAI's public description of how its models should behave. The 29 October version is built on five values: faithfulness to human intent, harm minimization, honesty and transparency, human agency, and care.
How does it work?
OpenAI sets the boundaries, developers direct apps inside them, and users direct the work inside those, under an updated chain of command. Most rules are defaults that developers and users can override.
Why does it matter?
It sets the defaults that ChatGPT and the OpenAI API work toward. Most style rules are retired, so tone should follow each user's preferences. OpenAI says its current models do not yet fully match the new Spec.
Who is it for?
Developers building on OpenAI models and AI policy researchers.

Genie 4 — DeepMind's world model adds native audio and live text steering
A world model you can steer with words while it runs, now with sound, speaking characters and simulated physics.
What is it?
Genie 4 generates an interactive environment in real time that a user can explore and change while it runs. Sound, music and dialogue are generated together with the picture.
How does it work?
Gemini Omni anchors the look and behavior of each simulation, while Gemini 3.8 Flash acts as a guiding agent. Users type commands to move the camera, change the weather or add objects.
Why does it matter?
World models are a training ground for agents and robots, and DeepMind describes early work pairing Genie 4 with Gemini Robotics. Sessions are still limited to a few minutes.
Who is it for?
World-model researchers, robotics teams, game and media creators.

Google AI Mode dodged 'who won 2020?' — Google calls it a technical gap
Google's AI Mode named winners for most US elections but sent 2020 questions to the FEC. Google says a data gap caused it.
What is it?
Ars Technica found that Google's AI Mode would not name the 2020 US presidential winner and pointed to the FEC's report instead. ChatGPT and Claude answered the question directly.
How does it work?
Google says its systems check election answers against news or AP data for recent elections and historic records for older ones, and that "there was a technical gap with 2020". Results were inconsistent, and VPN checks outside the US returned direct answers.
Why does it matter?
AI Mode sits inside Google Search, so a deflection on a settled fact reaches everyone who asks. Google says the fix will cover 2020 and the 2022 Senate races.
Who is it for?
People building or auditing AI search and answer engines.

Claude Code 2.1.314 — a block on writes outside the project and gateway groups
Claude Code 2.1.314 can refuse every write outside your project and routes gateway users by identity group.
What is it?
A new permissions.blockWritesOutsideWorkingDirectories setting makes Write, Edit and NotebookEdit refuse paths outside the working directories in every permission mode.
How does it work?
The Claude apps gateway gains a groups option on upstreams, so only developers in the listed IdP groups reach that upstream. Bedrock upstreams can also log a guardrail_trace.
Why does it matter?
Teams get a hard guard against stray file edits and cleaner gateway access control. Fixes include claude -p exiting 0 with no output on startup failure; it now prints the error and exits 1.
Who is it for?
Teams running Claude Code behind a company gateway or on cloud providers.
