Holy cow! It’s Marathon time again. For those of you new to the neighborhood: WELCOME.
WFMU is a non-commercial, listener-sponsored radio station broadcasting from Jersey City, NJ. It began its long, illustrious (and sometimes sketchy) life in East Orange on the campus of Upsala College. For many decades it’s been fully independent.
The way WFMU pays for the lion’s share of its operating expenses, including the VERY pricey streaming costs — which is how I manage to get on the air — is through an annual fundraising pledge drive, aka, The Marathon.
We do it once a year, for two weeks right around now. It begins tomorrow, March 2, and ends on March 15.
Unlike pledge drives of typical public radio (of which we are not), our marathon happens once a year for two weeks… and it’s FUN. DJs tag-team and provide great radio and witty repartee.

You provide money.

In exchange, you get stuff.

Here are a few examples:

Pledge $75 or more to my show and get a buncha stuff, including that t-shirt, and this:

“No Songs About Buildings; Just Food” is the name of my marathon premium for this year. It’s a mix CD of 27 songs about… you guessed it… FOOD. Regular listeners will recognize some of them from Snack Time, which happens every week at 9:45 on my show.

What’s in the Wendy Art Prize Pack?
(What isn’t in the Wendy Art Prize Pack?!)

It contains the original drawing, roughly 9”x9”, of the cover art of my very first marathon premium, “Songs in the Key of Cheese.” I drew it. I colored it. I hand-lettered it, which meant I had to learn and expand on the font from the original album cover this one parodies.

You also get eight of my show’s promo postcards. I made them all and color-copied them on cardstock at the library.

That’s not all. You also get three greeting-card sets. Each card is a handmade original (blank inside) with a handmade original envelope. One of them is from my new series, called “Psychic Communication.” Another of them is one of the last of the “Oblique Strategies” series. The third has David Bowie on it!

But wait, there’s more!

You also get two of my hand-lettered “A Better World is Possible” envelopes, which is a meditation I do when I’m feeling down. And you can mail stuff in them! You just write the address on the flap side. Yup. I do it all the time.

Oh. You think I’m done? Not even close.
You also get two blank books I made, perfect for journaling, drawing pictures, or making a list of all the music you wanna buy because you heard it on Wreck Your Own Adventure! One book has lined pages and one has unlined pages.

And, because you may have missed it the first time around, I’m including the last remaining copy of Volume One of The Wreck Your Own Adventure Program Guide, a zine I made in 2023. Holy cow!

None of this is sold in stores. I don’t sell my art.
