Wreck Your Own Adventure Newsletter 1-18-26: We Beat 'Em Before...

Greetings, Wrecking Crew!

Art by Emily K. https://www.emilyk.art/protest-printouts/

Even if you, like me, make a concerted effort to avoid national news, it’s pretty clear that it’s pretty grim out there for many folks just trying to keep themselves and their loved ones safe, going about their business, going to school, going to work, trying to get to the grocery store, avoiding the brown-shirts, etc.

It makes me thankful to live in a relatively peaceful place, but as we’ve seen, that could change with little to no warning. If you live in a relatively peaceful place, now is a good time to shore up your reserves and your connections because it’s not a matter of “if” you’ll need them, but when you’ll need them.

A few things that keep me going in these dark times, season-wise and otherwise:
1. Do what I’m good at, do what I love, especially things that bring people together for positive reasons, and that increase my feeling of gratitude.
2. To quote the sign-off of one of my favorite radio shows (now on hiatus), The Radio is Broken: “Get the fuck off the internet!” I know, I know. This is an email. My radio show is on the internet. I choose my exposure very judiciously.
2. Stay connected to actual people via phone, letters, email, text, or the best way: in-person. (Note: For me, this means NOT via social media. Your mileage may vary, but I find that these connections are tenuous at best.)
3. Get to know my local, state, and Congressional political leaders. Make sure they know me and know my name so I can advocate for myself and my community.
4. Share my resources as much as I am able with my immediate community, or elsewhere as the need arises.

Regarding Number 4, folks in Minneapolis and elsewhere in Minnesota are in serious distress. Have a few spare bucks lying around? Have more than a few? Support those who are taking care of the most vulnerable among us: https://www.standwithminnesota.com/

Meanwhile, I got a radio show to host. Wreck Your Own Adventure on WFMU’s Give the Drummer Radio. That’s where you’ll find me every Monday morning, 9 ‘til noon, unless I’m on my way to New Jersey or the monastery, or I’m ill.

None of those are happening tomorrow as far as I can tell, so I’ll be on the radio. You can tune in here: https://wfmu.org/playlists/shows/160337
If you can’t join us tomorrow, that link will also bring you to the archive of the show shortly after it airs.
Regular listeners may recall that last week I aired a brand-new Wreck Theme from Bellows Falls Yacht Club Official Bandleader, Karl Ward. Well, Karl sent me TWO, so I’m debuting another one a few minutes after 9am tomorrow. Tune in and hear it!

See you on the radio!
xo,
-Wendy del Formaggio
