Samhain - Releasing our previous selves
I like to share often that there are themes in the Celtic Wheel Festivals, and also I believe that we can find inspiration for new themes and reflections as we encounter each one (some might argue against this which is fair enough! but this has been my approach and I am delighted that you're here exploring it with me).
This year, as I came to reflect on some of the common themes of Samhain (end of the harvest, honouring ancestors, reflect on the past, prepare for the dark), it was particularly the honouring of the past and the mix of the endings and beginnings.
The trees releasing their leaves always feels like a beautiful invitation for letting go of the external efforts that drive our energy away from who and where we truly want to be.
But as we release, we could understand that in some ways, we are letting a past version of ourselves go. Letting go of the version of ourselves that cared about X or worried about Y or was trying to do Z. And in doing so, we can make space for the winter process of nourishing and supporting a more aligned version of ourselves.
So my invitation is to write a letter to this past version of yourself
Because release isn't necessarily easy. Letting go can be hard.
And because finding self compassion at this time of year is so deeply needed. And through finding more self compassion, we are more able to find compassion for others around us.
We aren't letting go because of wrongness. Past versions of us weren't wrong, they were doing what they felt they needed in the space that they were in.
We can take some time to honour those versions of ourselves. To send them love and thank them for the ways they tried to protect us. And allow them to be released as we make space for the new.
You can take this invitation in whatever way feels right for you. I'll offer some prompts below in case they feel helpful.
🍂 I understand why...
🍂 I am grateful for the way you...
🍂 I no longer need...
I'd truly love to hear how you get on - you can reply directly to this email and chat to me!
