The second longest continuous wall in the world snakes across the Aravalli hills. Kumbhalgarh Fort's battlements stretch 36 kilometres, guarding ancient temples and palaces within.

Kumbhalgarh sits high in the Aravallis, about 80 kilometres north of Udaipur. Built in the 15th century by Rana Kumbha, its walls are so thick that eight horses could ride abreast along the top. Most tourists head to Udaipur or Jodhpur and skip this entirely — which is precisely why it's worth the detour.

I arrived late afternoon when the tour buses had already left. The fort was nearly empty, and the wall stretched out ahead of me across ridge after ridge, dissolving into haze. There's a particular quality to Rajasthani light at that hour — everything turns amber, the stone almost seems to breathe. I remember thinking this looked like something from a fantasy novel, except it was real and I was standing on it.
