๐Ÿ“ท Kiln at Dusk โ€” West Bengal

Kiln at Dusk

Kiln at Dusk

West Bengal ยท street

A brick kiln chimney rises above golden paddy fields at sunset, smoke drifting into the amber sky. Rural industry and agriculture sharing the same landscape, the same light.

The brick kilns of Bengal are scattered across the rural landscape, their tall chimneys rising above the paddy fields like industrial exclamation marks. They operate through the dry season, when the clay is workable and the monsoon won't wash away the unfired bricks. The smoke from their chimneys drifts across the fields in grey ribbons.

I shot this at sunset, when the paddy was catching the last light and the kiln chimney was silhouetted against a sky going from gold to rose. The smoke was lit from behind by the setting sun, turning it from grey to amber. There's a tension in this image between the agricultural and the industrial โ€” the ancient field, the modern kiln โ€” but in Bengal they coexist without conflict. The bricks build the houses. The paddy feeds the builders. The smoke rises and disperses. By morning, the sky will be clear, and the kiln will be firing again.
