Sunset Sanctum

Orchha, Madhya Pradesh ยท architecture

Temple spires silhouetted against a burning sky โ€” the sun dropping behind the shikhara like a deity returning home. Birds scatter across the amber dusk.

Orchha is one of those places that history forgot and beauty preserved. The Chaturbhuj Temple here was built in the 16th century to house an idol of Lord Ram, and its spire rises above the town like a landmark from another age. Most visitors come at midday. I came at sunset.

The sun dropped behind the main shikhara at exactly the right angle โ€” not beside it, but directly behind, so the spire split the light into two burning halves. The birds appeared on cue, spiralling upward in the warm thermals. The sky went through every shade from gold to copper to deep rose in about six minutes. I shot continuously, but this frame โ€” with the sun centred and the birds scattered โ€” was the one. Sometimes a place arranges its own farewell.
