Light Between Stones

Light Between Stones

Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh ยท architecture

Sunlight bursts through the carved corridors of a Khajuraho temple, turning ancient sandstone into a cathedral of light and shadow. The sculptures seem to breathe.

There's a moment in the late afternoon at Khajuraho when the sun drops low enough to shoot between the temple towers and light up the carved walls from the side. The sculptors who carved these figures a thousand years ago must have known this would happen โ€” the light catches every curve, every gesture, every expression on the stone faces.

I was shooting from below, looking up between two sections of the temple, when the sun appeared in the gap. The flare was intense โ€” technically a problem, aesthetically a gift. It turned the carved stone into something luminous, almost molten. The figures on the walls โ€” dancers, musicians, lovers, gods โ€” seemed to move in the shifting light. This is what separates Khajuraho from a museum: the sculptures were never meant to be seen in flat, even light. They were designed for this โ€” for the sun to animate them.
