๐Ÿ“ท Iron Crossing โ€” Uttarakhand, India

Iron Crossing

Iron Crossing

Uttarakhand, India ยท landscape

A steel truss bridge spans a mountain river gorge, its industrial geometry stark against misty Himalayan foothills. Engineering meets wilderness at the edge of the plains.

The foothills of Uttarakhand are full of these bridges โ€” British-era iron trusses that have carried traffic across Himalayan rivers for over a century. They're functional, no-nonsense structures, but set against the mountains they become something else entirely. The angular steel against the soft curves of the hills creates a tension that I find endlessly photogenic.

This particular bridge sits where the plains give way to the mountains proper. Behind it, the hills rise in layers, each one hazier than the last until they dissolve into cloud. The morning mist hadn't fully cleared, which gave everything a blue-grey tone that made the bridge's dark iron stand out like a line drawn in ink. I like photographs where human engineering and natural landscape are in conversation rather than conflict. This bridge doesn't fight the mountains. It acknowledges them.
