Spires of Khajuraho

The towering shikhara of a Khajuraho temple rendered in black and white — every carved detail sharp against a pale sky. A thousand years of devotion frozen in sandstone.

Khajuraho's temples were built between 950 and 1050 AD by the Chandela dynasty, and what survived the centuries is still enough to stop you in your tracks. The sculptures are famous, of course, but it's the architecture that holds you — the way the towers rise in clusters, each one slightly smaller than the last, pulling your eye upward like a stone flame.

I chose black and white because colour was a distraction here. The ornament is so dense, so layered, that the eye needs help finding structure. In monochrome, the shikhara becomes pure geometry — a mountain of carved sandstone against empty sky. The tree on the left provides the only organic counterpoint. I stood here for twenty minutes, waiting for the clouds to clear so the light would be even. Sometimes the best thing a photographer can do is subtract.
