Monsoon Green

After the rains, the fields glow impossibly green under scattered white clouds. The air smells of wet earth and new growth — the Indian monsoon at its most generous.

The Indian monsoon does something extraordinary to the landscape. For months, the earth bakes under a relentless sun until the soil cracks and the trees look exhausted. Then the rains arrive — sometimes gently, sometimes with biblical force — and within days, the entire world turns green. Not a subtle green, not an English-countryside green, but an almost aggressive, impossible, screaming green.

This photograph was taken in the heart of the monsoon, on one of those days when the rain pauses and the clouds break apart to let the sun through. The fields were glowing. The banyan tree on the right stood like a patriarch surveying its domain. The air smelled of petrichor and fresh growth. There's a reason Indian poets have written about the monsoon for three thousand years — it is, without exaggeration, the most dramatic seasonal transformation on earth.
