Steps Through Time
Central India ยท architecture
Weathered stone stairs spiral upward through an ancient fort gateway. Each step worn smooth by centuries of footfall โ history you can feel underfoot.
Central India is dotted with forts that most people have never heard of โ not the grand Rajput palaces of Rajasthan, but older, rougher, built for war rather than spectacle. This staircase is inside one of those forts. The steps are worn concave in the middle from centuries of soldiers, merchants, and pilgrims climbing to the top.
I was drawn to the geometry here โ the sharp diagonal of the wall cutting against the curved arch, the steps leading the eye upward into that band of pale sky. The stone has this beautiful pitted texture, like the surface of the moon, where the weather has eaten into it over hundreds of years. You can run your hand along the wall and feel the centuries.
