Cathedral of Roots
India ยท nature
Shafts of light pierce through a massive banyan canopy, turning the aerial roots into pillars of a natural cathedral. The air here is thick, green, and ancient.
The Indian banyan is not a tree so much as a small civilisation. A single specimen can spread across an acre, its aerial roots dropping from branches to become new trunks, blurring the line between one tree and a forest. Under a mature banyan, the light filters through the canopy in shafts that shift as the wind moves the leaves. It feels like being inside a living building.
I found this one in the late morning when the sun was high enough to punch through the canopy but low enough to create visible beams in the humid air. The aerial roots hung like curtains around me. Everything was green โ the light, the air, the moss on the roots. The silence underneath was absolute, the kind that makes your ears ring. These trees are considered sacred in India, and standing under this one, I understood why.
