Hidden Cascade
Central India ยท landscape
Water carves its way through ancient rock, framed by a canopy of green. A waterfall tucked between volcanic formations โ you hear the roar long before you see the drop.
The Narmada river basin is full of these hidden spots โ places where the water has been working on the rock for so long that the gorges look sculpted by hand. This cascade is off the main tourist trail. A local chai seller pointed me in the right direction, down a path that was more suggestion than trail.
The volcanic rock here is layered in reds and greys, stacked like pages of a geological book. The water finds its way through the gaps, pooling in turquoise pockets before dropping again. The sound is enormous โ it fills the gorge and bounces off the walls until you can't tell where it's coming from. Standing at the edge, watching the water disappear below, I understood why rivers are sacred here.
