Red and grey volcanic rock carved by millennia of flowing water. The gorge stretches wide under a pale sky — a landscape that predates memory.
The rock formations of central India are among the oldest exposed surfaces on the planet — Deccan basalt from volcanic eruptions that occurred 66 million years ago. When you stand in a gorge like this, you're looking at the same rock that witnessed the extinction of the dinosaurs. The scale of time involved is genuinely incomprehensible.
The colours here shift through the day — grey and blue in the morning, red and ochre at noon, purple at dusk. The water has carved channels and pools into the basalt, creating natural swimming holes that glow turquoise against the dark rock. I spent an entire day here, moving with the light, watching the shadows change the geometry of the gorge. It's the kind of place that makes you feel simultaneously very small and very lucky.
