Kratos secures $400m DoW funding for hypersonic systems - Army Technology

Kratos Defense & Security Solutions (Kratos) has received approximately $400m in funding from the United States Department of War (DoW) to support several hypersonic system and national security-related programmes. Work linked to these hypersonic system programmes is set to take place at their secure facilities as well as at government sites. Kratos has been delivering both propulsion and flyer systems, including products such as the Erinyes Hypersonic Flyer, Dark Fury, Zeus, and Oriole Solid Rocket Motors, along with other systems. The California-based company is also involved in the engineering, development, production, and integration of hypersonic systems, flight vehicles, solid rocket motors, and other high-speed systems. Under that agreement, Kratos is responsible for supporting test and evaluation activities focused on thermal protection systems in hypersonic vehicles, including efforts to analyse a range of mission scenarios and flight conditions to identify suitable testing environments.

Space Development Agency issues awards to build 36 accelerated missile defense tracking layer satellites for Tranche 3 in support of Golden Dome for America

Sentinel still on course to achieve programme milestones following acoustic testing - Janes

The LGM-35A Sentinel intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) is still on track to reach its programme milestones following the completion of its acoustic testing. The acoustic testing was done at Northrop Grumman's Large Acoustic Test Facility (LATF) in Redondo Beach, California in December 2025. Previously stated timelines for the programme are still on track and continued confidence in the programme from US Air Force leaders is “well-merited”. Initial launch is still on track for 2027, followed by initial operating capabilities in the early 2030s. Acoustic testing is designed to validate whether the Sentinel is capable of withstanding the extreme conditions of a “hot launch” underground in its missile silos.

Thermal Protection Systems (TPS) for hypersonic vehicles are critical to manage extreme aerodynamic heating, which arises from shock wave compression and viscous dissipation in the boundary layer, leading to intense surface temperatures and heat fluxes. Unlike transient ballistic reentry, sustained hypersonic flight, particularly for air-breathing vehicles, necessitates a shift from traditional "insulated airplane" approaches to advanced "hot structures" and Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMCs). CMCs are engineered to operate at elevated temperatures, leveraging their high strength-to-weight ratio, excellent high-temperature mechanical properties, and resistance to thermal shock and oxidation. These materials form components like leading edges, acreage panels, and control surfaces, designed to radiate a significant portion of the incident heat away while maintaining structural integrity. The system's architecture relies on the material's ability to withstand high temperatures directly, minimizing the heat conducted to the underlying vehicle structure and payload. Key challenges include ensuring environmental durability in harsh hypersonic environments and developing robust fabrication processes for complex CMC components.
