Market conditions through the week

This week had five trading days because the market was closed on Wednesday the 16th. Fresh seafood handling volume increased 7% from the previous week.

Friday, September 11: In pre-weekend trading, continued rainfall kept buying interest subdued. Yellowtail fell 20–30%, Pacific saury extended its modest decline, Japanese flying squid was soft, and chub mackerel was slightly softer. Bonito and Japanese sardine were both firm, while horse mackerel was little changed. The overall market was soft.

Saturday, September 12: In trading ahead of the market closure, prolonged rain weakened buying interest, but generally low arrivals supported generally good trade. Horse mackerel rose 20–30%, chub mackerel was slightly higher, Pacific saury posted a modest rebound, and yellowtail held firm. Japanese flying squid was slightly lower, bonito edged down, and Japanese sardine was steady. The overall market was mixed.

Monday, September 14: At the start of the week, arrivals increased, but improved weather supported fair buying interest. Horse mackerel fell 40–50%, Japanese sardine declined 10–20%, yellowtail was soft, and Japanese flying squid was slightly softer. Pacific saury was firm, bonito was little changed, and chub mackerel was steady. The overall market was soft.

Tuesday, September 15: In trading ahead of the market closure, rainy conditions kept buying interest subdued. Japanese sardine and Japanese flying squid were both soft, Pacific saury was slightly softer, and yellowtail rose 20–30%. Horse mackerel was mixed, bonito was little changed, and chub mackerel was steady. The overall market continued soft.

Thursday, September 17: In trading after the market closure, increased arrivals and other factors left buying interest dull. Pacific saury fell 20–40%, horse mackerel declined 20–30%, and Japanese sardine fell 10–20%. Japanese flying squid remained soft, bonito was firm, yellowtail was little changed, and chub mackerel was steady. The overall market declined.

Weekly species summary

Horse mackerel arrivals included medium fish mainly from Chiba and Tottori, and small/medium fish primarily from Fukushima. Volume increased 26% from the previous week, while medium-size prices were up just over 20%.

Chub mackerel arrivals were mainly from Miyagi and Saga. Volume decreased 4% from the previous week, while prices were almost unchanged. Japanese sardine arrivals were mainly from Chiba and Kagoshima. Volume increased 4%, while prices were 10% lower. Japanese flying squid arrivals were mainly from Aomori. Volume increased 24%, while prices were 5% lower.

Bonito arrivals were mainly from Miyagi. Volume increased 19% from the previous week, while prices were up just over 5%. Pacific saury arrivals were mainly from Hokkaido. Volume increased 48% from the previous week, while fresh Pacific saury prices were down just over 15%.
