Market conditions through the week

Friday, September 4: In pre-weekend trading, buying interest was weak because of deteriorating weather. Pacific saury fell 10–30%, while horse mackerel declined 20%, Japanese flying squid 10–20%, and bonito 10%, all continuing lower. Yellowtail held firm, chub mackerel was firm, and Japanese sardine was steady. The overall market continued to decline.

Saturday, September 5: In trading ahead of the market closure, buying interest improved and trade was generally fair. Pacific saury and bonito both posted slight rebounds. Yellowtail held firm, chub mackerel was slightly higher, horse mackerel was firm, Japanese flying squid was soft amid fatigue at high prices, and Japanese sardine was steady. The overall market was firm.

Monday, September 7: At the start of the week, rain weakened buying interest. Pacific saury continued slightly higher, Japanese sardine was soft, bonito was slightly lower, and Japanese flying squid remained soft. Horse mackerel and yellowtail were little changed, while chub mackerel was steady. The overall market was little changed.

Tuesday, September 8: In trading ahead of the market closure, buying interest improved somewhat as arrivals declined sharply. Chub mackerel and Japanese flying squid each rose 10–20%, while Japanese sardine gained 10%. Pacific saury was firm, bonito held firm, yellowtail was soft, and horse mackerel was steady. The overall market was slightly higher.

Thursday, September 10: In the first session after the market closure, continued bad weather left buying interest subdued. Horse mackerel surged 50–70% on high landing prices, while bonito rose 20–30% and Japanese flying squid was firm. With ample supplies, Pacific saury declined 10–30%, while chub mackerel and Japanese sardine were both soft. The overall market was mixed.

Weekly species summary

Horse mackerel arrivals consisted of medium-sized fish mainly from Chiba; there were no arrivals of small-to-medium fish. Volume increased 5% from the previous week, while medium-sized fish prices rose marginally.

Chub mackerel arrivals were mainly from Miyagi and Chiba. Volume increased 17% from the previous week, and prices were more than 10% higher.

Japanese sardine arrivals were mainly from Chiba. Volume declined 33% from the previous week, while prices rose by just over 5%.

Japanese flying squid arrivals were mainly from Aomori. Volume increased 38% from the previous week, while prices declined marginally.

Bonito arrivals were mainly from Miyagi. Volume increased 19% from the previous week, while prices were down by just over 5%.

Pacific saury arrivals were mainly from Hokkaido. Volume increased 66% from the previous week, while prices fell by more than 35%.
