Market conditions through the week

Friday, September 25: In pre-weekend trading, trade was generally smooth. Horse mackerel fell 20–30%, while Pacific saury and Japanese sardine each declined 10–20%. Japanese flying squid was soft, chub mackerel was slightly easier, bonito was firm, and hamachi (farmed yellowtail) saw little change. The overall market was slightly lower.

Saturday, September 26: In trading ahead of the market closure, rain dampened buying interest. Bonito fell 30–40% and Japanese flying squid declined 10–20%; Japanese sardine continued lower by 10–20%. Hamachi was slightly easier, horse mackerel remained soft, Pacific saury rebounded slightly, and chub mackerel was steady. The overall market declined further.

Monday, September 28: At the start of the week, rain continued to keep buying interest subdued. Pacific saury was firm and Japanese sardine held firm. Hamachi edged lower, horse mackerel remained soft, chub mackerel was slightly easier, bonito saw little change, and Japanese flying squid was steady. The overall market saw little change.

Tuesday, September 29: In trading ahead of the market closure, consecutive days of rain kept buying interest weak. Horse mackerel fell 10%, bonito was soft, Japanese sardine was slightly easier, Japanese flying squid held firm, hamachi was mixed, chub mackerel saw little change, and Pacific saury was steady. The overall market was soft.

Thursday, October 1: In trading after the market closure, buying interest improved at the beginning of the month and sales were generally good. Horse mackerel edged lower, while Pacific saury and chub mackerel were both soft. Bonito was slightly easier, Japanese flying squid saw little change, and hamachi and Japanese sardine were both steady. The overall market remained soft.

Weekly species summary

Horse mackerel arrivals consisted of medium-sized fish from Chiba and Kyoto, and small-medium fish mainly from Kyoto. Volume increased 29% from the previous week. Prices were down just under 25% for medium-sized fish and down more than 15% for small-medium fish.

Chub mackerel arrivals were mainly from Miyagi. Volume increased 17% from the previous week, while prices were down slightly less than 10%.

Japanese sardine arrivals were mainly from Chiba. Volume approximately doubled from the previous week, while prices were down more than 15%.

Japanese flying squid arrivals were mainly from Aomori. Volume increased 33% from the previous week, while prices were down 10%.

Bonito arrivals were mainly from Miyagi. Volume increased 24% from the previous week, while prices rose 5%.

Pacific saury arrivals were mainly from Hokkaido. Volume declined 58% from the previous week, while fresh Pacific saury prices rose by more than 35%.

Shucked oyster volume was unchanged.
