We’re near the 80 day mark of Donald Trump’s presidency, with 20 days of his first 100 days left, but our country remains in a sort-of-crisis mode:
-
1) At the start of this month, President Trump & his State Department signaled that the U.S. no longer sees the removal of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad from from power as a priority. 2) Days later, the Assad government carried out a chemical attack (the 2nd since the Syrian Civil War began), and dozens of civilians were killed. 3) In retaliation, President Trump and the U.S. military carried out an airstrike attack against the Syrian government without approvals from congress or the U.N. 4) Yet the President continues to maintain a policy of barring Syrian refugees from entering the U.S. See The Guardian's Coverage of US' First Direct Military Attack of Assad, The war in Syria, explained and Timeline: U.S. approach to the Syrian civil war.
-
After blocking the nomination of Merrick Garland for Supreme Court Justice and leaving the Supreme Court vacant for a year, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Republican Senators failed to secure 60 votes to confirm Neil Gorsuch for Supreme Court Justice and changed procedural rules to allow for the confirmation of Gorsuch with 54-45 votes. See Republicans just confirmed Neil Gorsuch after using the “nuclear option” in the Senate, Neil Gorsuch and The Senate Went “Nuclear” to Give Donald Trump a Win on Gorsuch: Now What?
-
Chairman of the Intelligence Committee Devin Nunes temporarily recuses himself from Trump-Russia investigation amid ethics complaints; and it was revealed that Eric Prince, brother of Betsy DeVos, held a secret meeting to establish a back channel for Trump-Putin communications. See One week, three more Trump-Russia connections and Trump campaign’s Russia ties: Who’s involved.
However, we’re in April recess for congress so it’s another opportunity to put more pressure on our members of congress, especially Rep. Hunter, and demand accountability!

Follow-up with Rep. Hunter and ask when will he be available to his constituents in an in-person town hall during this district period. Script: “Hi, I’m a constituents from [City, Zip Code]. It’s April recess, but I haven’t heard any news about Rep. Hunter holding a town hall. Is he not working and meeting with us, his constituents, during the April recess? Is he keeping his promise to us, his constituents, about holding town halls?”
-
Contact members of congress and ask them to demand the ban on Syrian refugees from entering the U.S. be lifted. For Rep. Hunter, ask him to co-sponsor H.R.1503 (or the SOLVE Act) which voids the Muslim travel ban. Talking points: “I’m sadden that innocent Syrian families, especially Syrian children, have little recourse to escape warfare in their country. I’m concerned that we as a country see it’s okay for us to launch missiles in their country as a response to the Syrian government’s chemical attack but not allow Syrian civilians to seek refuge in our country and escape from military attacks. Will you commit to working to let innocent Syrian families be able to seek refuge in U.S. again?” See April 7, 2017: Syrian Missile Strike, Neil Gorsuch & HR. 1503/S. 608.

Wednesday
-
Contact Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez (D80) at (916) 319-2080 or local office (619) 338-8090 to thank and let her know you support AB805 which reforms San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG), a regional governmental body composed of elected officials representing 18 cities and the San Diego County that manage transportation among other things. They do a poor job and misled the public about Prop A which was defeated by local voters. AB805 will reform SANDAG to ensure that it is more representative of the majority of residents in the region. It is high time that SANDAG is reformed. SANDAG has such a poor reputation in the region for managing the transportation dollars and protecting the environment that it must be reformed.
-
Contact Mayor Sam Abed and Assemblymember Marie Waldron and let them know you support AB805.
-
Contact members of congress and express concerns about President Trump’s proposed budget. See Resisting Trump’s Budget: No Cuts, No Wall, No Deportation Force.
Thursday

Contact Governor Brown and Assemblymember Waldron and ask them to support SB-54 (or California Values Act), SB-31 which prohibits local governments from creating religious-based registries, and SB-6 which provides legal representation for individuals facing deportation. SB-54, SB-31 and SB-6 passed the Senate and are at the Assembly for review. See April 4, 2017: Neil Gorsuch, Pro-Sanctuary Bills in CA, Scott Gottlieb.
-
Contact members of congress and demand an independent investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. Election. For Rep. Hunter, ask him to co-sponsor H.R.356 (or the Protecting Our Democracy Act) which establishes a committee for the investigation. See Demand an Independent Investigation into Russian Interference in the 2016 U.S. Election.
Friday
-
Follow-up with Senator Anderson and explain why you’re in favor of SB-149 which requires presidential candidates to release their last 5 tax returns to be listed on CA election ballot. Senate Elections and Constitutional Amendments Committee is set to hear the bill on April 18. Talking points: During the campaign, President Trump promises to release his tax returns and he has yet to fulfill his promise. We, the public, deserve transparency and honesty from our president and future president candidates.
-
Contact members of congress and ask them to demand President Trump release his tax returns. Ask them to support H.R.305 and S.26 (or the Presidential Tax Transparency Act) which requires the President to disclose their tax returns. See How to Get Trump’s Tax Returns.
