Jess here to talk shop: this Mock Trial project is going to be a crowdfunded indie movie. How come though? What about HOLLYWOOD?
We’ve had a lot of fun writing in Hollywood! Like a body swap comedy about an ogre and dark wizard, a TV show about what happens in beach towns in the off season, and a big original ensemble musical with David Wain. You’d like them I think!
But there are a lot of reasons a movie might not get made. But mostly our career has grown up in the era of big IP where fewer and fewer original ideas get made. BIG hurdles for musicals, and even BIG hurdles for comedies. You’ve probably noticed! There aren’t many out there! Add a pandemic, strikes and endless corporate mergers and changes and well, it’s just hard out there dawg.
Fortunately, we’ve always been able to keep making art for people—creating a podcast, or a show for Dropout, and touring for wonderful audiences around the country. (Do you have your tour tickets yet?)
And that has been extremely rewarding but…. I’d really like to make a movie. So we designed one that we (think) we can afford to make on our own - filming in some easy/donated locations with a bunch of my friends. I’m going to direct it, which is very exciting for me! It’s been a growing interest of mine over the past few years and I self-financed a short last year to test it out. Guess what? I loved it! And I’m bringing a lot of the creative team from that process to this film.
We’re out here trying to make our own good stuff on the margins but we are going to need your help.
