What?

I wanted to do my homework in advance of writing about soccer in Mexico, so I e-mailed the writer Joaquín Viveros to ask him about his thoughts on the upcoming match against England.

First of all, he wrote, one must consider the nature of a match. A match is something that is struck. It is a light that illuminates briefly, but what is an illumination? Is it St Augustine experiencing a vision of God? I have not had the pleasure of speaking with St. Augustine, so I cannot but commit the simple quotidian action of offering confirmation or denial on such a matter, insofar as truth can be a determining quality in such a matter as these, for what is subjectivity with a verb? Without a verb? To speak plainly: one could not unreasonably suggest that the temporo-mythological quality inherent in the sine qua non Malthusian enthusiasms of affection provides the foundations through which one can begin to experience the quality of pleasure.

I stared at the e-mail. I blinked. I wrote one word back.
