There will be zero gift guides in this space.
There will be zero “best of” lists in this space.
I do plan on offering the final list of books I read in 2024 a couple of weeks from now, and it’s not exactly a “best of” but it does include books that I finished reading. I decided (again) to not include the list of books I started reading and didn’t finish.
Look: I’m just relieved that this hell year is ending.
Yes, I agree that time is relative. A new year can start whenever you like. The way my 2024 has gone, though, I’m eager to feel a reset in 2025. To begin something different. Hopefully with my partner’s cancer resolved, in our rearview mirrors.
I use a book—out of print, given to me by a friend many years ago—called The Book of Houses. My “Resurrection Day” or “first day of my first house” begins this week. I’ve written out my list of hopes and wishes for next year, as I do every year with the guidance of this book. As we get nearer to the winter solstice, I hope you, sweet readers, gentle and not-so-gentle readers, are envisioning what your futures might look like. Will you be in the streets? Will you be finding your footing in your local mutual aid groups? Will you be resting in preparation for action? Will you be attending to the needs of your neighbors?
Will you be listening? Will you be heeding the call when you do?
Pre-order the reissues of my books, coming in April 2025 from Northwestern University Press
