pit stop 1
Welcome to the Sunday post.
This week and next I have the pleasure of leading a nonfiction writing workshop with Tin House, and all my creative energies will be in use there. Today and next Sunday the El Camino will be making some very brief pit stops for snacks and soda and we will return to the road in full force on Sunday, 2/25.
A note to premium subscribers and Founding Members! The first 2024 Mommy's El Camino FRONT SEAT OFFICE HOUR is Friday, February 23rd at 1pm Pacific. RSVP by replying to this newsletter. We will meet via Zoom for one hour and write/create together, cameras off or on.
WHAT I READ RECENTLY THAT I LOVED:
The current political nightmare has produced an existential anguish for so many cultural workers, who are reckoning with questions around what art does, what makes art art to begin with, what effective cultural interventions look like, and how to be principled as makers.
Look, I pretty much love everything Harmony Holiday writes in her newsletter, this is just the most recent one I read and appreciated.
This Tabs Migration Report by Rusty Foster of Today In Tabs, about the migration of the newsletter from substack over to beehiiv. Though I obviously chose to move to Buttondown and am glad I did, I think it's useful to read about how others are managing the migration and how.
This woman spent over 500 days in a cave. I will never not love these kinds of stories. I texted this story to a friend Thought of you! I haven't seen in a while because we both love stories of extreme outdoor sports/risk and read whole books about them, and when she didn't reply immediately, I thought, Oh shit, does she think I'm comparing her to this woman in a cave? When she did reply it was loving and sweet and so, no, she did not think I was likening her to this woman who lived in a cave. I was just sharing what I know we like. Maybe you do, too? Check it out and see?
Though I am not a fan of Kamala, I keep a browser window open of this tweet because I laugh every fucken time I watch it. It...it me. Watch out.
And lastly, I'm positive I would never have come across the above tweet if it weren't for The Trend Report™!!!
Yes, I fully realize I am linking to a bunch of substacks. I wish it weren't so. I hope more people kick substack to the curb. Feel free to ask me how I moved to Buttondown--after 2/25 please. Or maybe I'll compose my own migration report.
Until next week--take good care of yourselves and each other.
