ARC Raiders' Frozen Trail Lands Today, and Embark Says It Knew Players Would Leave First

Embark Studios' Frozen Trail update hits ARC Raiders on October 8 with the snowy Pendola Pass map, a grappling hook, and a crashed Emperor ARC to raid. Executive producer Aleksander Grøndal told GamesRadar+ on October 7 that Embark "accepted the fact that we would have less players" when it moved to one big drop roughly every six months. Steam concurrents sit near 43,000, down from close to 500,000 at the November 2025 peak. The game is free on Steam, Xbox, and PlayStation until October 12.

Player impact: Lapsed squads get four free days to judge whether a six-month wait was worth it. If Steam numbers do not jump by Monday, the slow-cadence bet looks shaky.

ZERO Sievert Is Rewriting Its Enemy AI So Bandits Flank You as a Squad

The team behind ZERO Sievert, the top-down, Tarkov-style extraction shooter, posted an October update preview on Steam on October 7 built from more than 2,000 survey replies. Enemy AI is being rewritten from scratch so enemies move, flank, and push as squads. More guns and proper rabbit footstep audio are also planned. Two requests got a flat no: a collect-all button for ammo containers, and official co-op, which stays reserved for ZERO Sievert 2. No release date was given.

Player impact: Solo raiders who farm late-game zones on autopilot should expect fights that punish standing still. Co-op fans still have to rely on community mods until the sequel.

Halo Studios Is Reportedly Building Firefight for Campaign Evolved Before It Shuts Down

Halo insider Rebs Gaming reported on October 6 that about 30 Halo Studios staff spared from the recent Xbox layoffs are building one last free update for Halo: Campaign Evolved, with Firefight (a co-op horde mode) and Theater mode on the plan. The report, covered by Kotaku on October 7, says the studio will likely close after Halo Fest in December while Activision builds a separate Halo team. Halo Studios has not confirmed any of it.

Player impact: If it ships, Firefight gives Campaign Evolved owners a co-op reason to stay installed. It also signals the next new Halo is years away and will share nothing with this team's plans.

Call of Duty League Caster Maven Steps Away After Revealing He Is Dating His Partner's Ex-Wife

Longtime Call of Duty League (CDL) shoutcaster Clint "Maven" Evans said on October 7 that he is leaving the CDL "for the foreseeable future." In a post on X, he confirmed he is now dating Maurisa, the ex-wife of his casting partner Joseph "MerK" DeLuca, and called the relationship "unconventional/taboo." He did not say whether the league asked him to go.

Player impact: One of competitive CoD's familiar booth voices is gone, and the broadcast loses its longest-running pairing. Viewers will hear a different CDL booth when matches resume.

Thunder Lotus, the French-Canadian studio behind Spiritfarer, announced on October 6 that its action-adventure At Fate's End slips from 2026 to an unspecified 2027 date because it needs "more love and care." The studio paired the delay with a new gameplay trailer and the game's first playable demo, live now on Steam. It is still listed as coming to Xbox Game Pass.

Player impact: Play the demo this week and you will know whether it belongs on your 2027 list. Game Pass members can skip the preorder and wait.

Dragon's Dogma 2: Dark Arisen Is Out, and One Reviewer Needed 50 Hours to Finish It

Capcom's $29.99 Dark Arisen expansion for Dragon's Dogma 2 releases on October 8 in the US and October 9 in the UK, Europe, and other regions, more than two years after the base game. Early reviews posted October 7 are strong: Push Square calls it an excellent expansion set in a large new region to the north, and says the main story and side quests took around 50 hours before an endgame opened. You do not need to finish the base game to start it.

Player impact: Players with an idle Dragon's Dogma 2 save get a sequel-sized reason to reinstall. At $30 for 50-plus hours, the value case is easy.

Sony Sells 419 VR Headset Patents to Meta as PS VR2 Support Stays Thin

Sony has transferred 419 XR and VR headset patents worldwide to Meta, including 43 US patents that changed hands between June and September 2026, according to ZDNet Korea, with follow-up from Road to VR. Push Square covered the sale on October 7. Sony has made no statement. PS VR2 still gets new releases on the PS Store, but first-party support for the headset has been thin since launch.

Player impact: Anyone eyeing a discounted PS VR2 should treat it as a finished platform and buy it only for games already out. Do not expect a PS VR3.

Discord Bot Double Counter Breach Exposes IPs Tied to 28 Million Accounts

Double Counter, an anti-alt-account bot used in more than 600,000 Discord servers, said in an October 5 incident report that a hacker copied about 12GB of data in 25 minutes. The data ties to roughly 28 million Discord accounts: usernames, IDs, IP addresses, and city-level locations, with about one million email addresses copied in full. The attacker got in through an old, unpatched server. Dexerto reports Discord paused new bot installs afterward.

Player impact: If your gaming Discord made you verify through Double Counter, assume your IP and rough location are out. Ignore any server invite claiming to come from the bot, especially ones sent October 4.

Denuvo Wants Discord, Valve, and Reddit to Unmask the Cracker Behind 26 Pirated Games

DRM maker Denuvo has asked a court for permission to subpoena Discord, Valve, and Reddit, VGC reported on October 7, citing TorrentFreak. The target is "voices38", a cracker Denuvo sued last month for stripping its protection from 26 games, including Resident Evil Requiem, Stellar Blade, 007 First Light, and Doom: The Dark Ages. The complaint lists their Discord user ID, a Reddit account, and seven Steam accounts.

Player impact: If the court signs off, Steam, Discord, and Reddit account records become a standard weapon for DRM companies. Watch whether Valve fights the request or hands the data over.

Respawn Veterans' Studio Gravity Well Lays Off 40+ Before Showing Its First Game

Gravity Well, the studio former Respawn developers Drew McCoy and Jon Shiring founded in 2020, said on October 6 it is laying off more than 40 people after its funding partner pulled out over the summer. Its first AAA game, in development for at least six years, was never shown publicly. Leadership says a smaller team will keep going but calls the studio's future "uncertain", Insider Gaming reported on October 7.

Player impact: A game from Titanfall and Apex Legends talent may never ship. That is one fewer new challenger for players tired of the same few live shooters.

Star Wars Zero Company Studio Brings Furloughed Devs Back After a Strong Launch

Bit Reactor CEO Greg Foertsch said on October 7 the studio has started returning furloughed staff to work. Around 80% of the team was reportedly sidelined without pay before the tactics game launched in late August because money was running out. Newzoo ranked Star Wars Zero Company the sixth-best PC game of August by revenue across six major Western markets, and Foertsch promised more updates "soon."

Player impact: More developers on payroll means patches and post-launch content for Zero Company are back on the table. Players waiting on fixes have a reason to stay patient.

Google Launches Playground, a Browser Tool That Turns Text Prompts Into Games

Google opened Playground on October 7, an experimental browser platform that builds simple games from typed prompts and lets creators share them by link. A Unity-powered version called Unity Spark, which generates 3D games from Unity store assets, is due later this year. Unity CEO Matt Bromberg said the tool is about building original experiences and warned that one-shotting a copy of an existing game does not make anyone the next Hideo Kojima.

Player impact: Expect a wave of prompt-made mini games in Discord servers and on stream within weeks. The open question is whether any of them hold attention longer than a clip.
