I’m only 30 pages into The Magic Mountain and rereading what I started reading years before, but I’m thinking is it really necessary that the reader know that his grandfather’s house had five stairs leading up to the front door? I’m a tradesman attorney who only includes material facts in my briefs. It’s possible that my knowledge of Hamburg architectural style is lacking or that there will be a payoff later in the book.
