The Viroqua Public Record: October 13, 2026
Issue #61 of The Viroqua Public Record newsletter

Your neighbor's guide to what's happening at City Hall — October 13, 2026
The Big Takeaway
The only city business on the books this week is a Viroqua Airport Commission meeting, and the item worth watching is hangar leases — the agreements that let pilots and businesses rent storage space for aircraft at the municipal airport. The commission has listed it for "discussion and possible action," meaning a vote could happen, but nothing has been decided yet. Also on the list: progress reports on the airport's weather station and its long-range master plan. For most of us, none of this changes trash day or the tax bill, but the airport is city-owned property, and lease terms are one of the few ways it earns its keep. [1]
Money Watch
• Here's the honest version: this agenda contains no dollar figures at all. The hangar lease item is named but not priced, and the updates on the weather system and master plan are listed as information items with no attached cost. That's normal for an agenda — the numbers often surface in the discussion itself, or in the minutes afterward. If you want to know what the city charges for hangar space or what the master plan work is costing, the meeting is where that would come out. We'll report figures once they appear in the public record rather than guess at them now. [1]

The Quick Rundown
• New hangar leases. The commission will discuss and may take action on new lease agreements. No terms, rates, or tenants are named in the agenda. [1]
• AWOS update. AWOS stands for Automated Weather Observing System — the equipment at the airport that measures wind, visibility, cloud height and temperature, and broadcasts it automatically to pilots deciding whether it's safe to land. It's listed as an update, with no indication of whether the news is a repair, an upgrade, or routine status. [1]
• Master plan and ALP update. The master plan is the airport's long-range blueprint for how the property develops over the next couple of decades. The ALP — Airport Layout Plan — is the companion map showing where runways, taxiways, hangars and buildings sit now and where they'd go later. These documents matter more than they sound like they do: the Federal Aviation Administration generally wants to see a project on an approved layout plan before it will help pay for it. An update here is an early look at what Viroqua might be positioning itself to build. [1]
• Other airport business. A catch-all item. In practice this is where unscheduled matters come up, so it's the part of the meeting that's hardest to predict from the agenda alone. [1]
One More Thing
Item three on the agenda is simply: "Welcome Rodney to the commission." That's Rodney Cain, newly listed among the Airport Commission members alongside Mike Olson, Arnold Nomann, Mike Sebion, Todd Spaeth, Geary Helgerson and Roy Torgerson, with Mike Skildum serving as assistant manager. It's a small thing, but it's a reminder that these boards run on neighbors who volunteer for them — seven people who show up midday on a Wednesday to decide how a city-owned airfield gets used. If you've ever wondered who's actually making these calls, now you have the list. [1]
