Precision Over Volume: The Execution Principle That Changes Everything
There's a principle I keep coming back to in my own leadership practice, and I want to share it with you because it changes how you think about everything — not just AI.
Precision over volume.
It means this: doing fewer things with greater intentionality will always outperform doing more things with less thought. Always. In every domain. Without exception.
Why This Matters Now
We live in a volume culture. More meetings. More initiatives. More data. More reports. More Slack messages. More everything.
AI amplifies this. It makes it trivially easy to produce more. More analyses. More options. More content. More possibilities. The temptation is to use AI to do everything faster and in greater quantity.
Resist that temptation.
The organizations that win with AI won't be the ones that produce the most. They'll be the ones that produce the RIGHT things with surgical precision.
Precision in Practice
Precision in decisions. Instead of analyzing twenty options, use AI to narrow to three and then apply deep human judgment to choose one. More options doesn't mean better decisions. It usually means slower decisions and decision fatigue.
Precision in communication. Instead of sending more messages, send fewer messages that are clearer and more specific. Use AI to draft, but use your judgment to cut. What can you remove and still be understood? Remove it.
Precision in execution. Instead of running twelve AI initiatives, run three. Fund them fully. Staff them properly. Give them the governance and support to succeed. Three successes beat twelve half-starts every time.
Precision in measurement. Instead of tracking twenty metrics, track three. The three that actually tell you whether you're winning. Everything else is noise.
The Precision Test
For any initiative, ask these three questions:
- What specific outcome does this produce? Not "value" — a SPECIFIC, measurable outcome.
- Is this the highest-leverage action we could take right now? Not just a good action — the BEST action given our constraints.
- What are we NOT doing so we can do this well? Precision requires sacrifice. If you're not saying no to something, you're not being precise.
A Prompt for Precision
"I'm currently working on these initiatives: [list them]. Analyze each for strategic leverage — the ratio of potential impact to required resources. Recommend which I should double down on, which I should maintain, and which I should stop. Assume I can only fully resource 3 initiatives. Be ruthless."
Let AI help you see what you're too close to evaluate. Then have the courage to act on what it reveals.
Try This Monday
Look at your week. Count the number of meetings, projects, and commitments. Ask: which three are the ones that will matter in six months? Clear space for those three. Be ruthless about the rest.
I wrote Geometric Precision as a manifesto for this exact principle — strategic execution that prioritizes precision over volume, clarity over complexity, and impact over activity.
Less. Better. Sharper. That's how you lead in the AI era.
