Axelrod Research — ASML: Guidance Rose, but the Valuation Needs 2027 Proof

ASML’s operating outlook improved much faster than the share-price margin of safety. The company’s 2026 sales and gross-margin upgrades strengthen the franchise case, but at the last sourced price the stock already requires a strong 2027: HOLD.

ASML — HOLD

Why now. This is a quiet-day re-underwrite rather than a response to a new filing. The thesis as of 2026-08-11 remains that ASML’s lithography monopoly is executing exceptionally well, while the valuation leaves too little room for normal semiconductor-cycle lumpiness.

The evidence. ASML reported Q2 2026 sales of €9.3bn and net income of €2.9bn on 2026-07-15. More importantly, it raised FY2026 sales guidance to €43–45bn and gross-margin guidance to 54–56%, from the €36–40bn sales and 51–53% margin ranges issued with Q1 2026 results. Intel’s use of EXE High-NA tools for some Panther Lake high-volume-manufacturing layers also moved High-NA from promise toward production validation.

The valuation is the constraint. The ADR closed at $1,733.48 on 2026-08-10, the latest price in the underlying analysis. Using approximately 394m shares as of the 2026-08-11 analysis implies roughly $683bn of equity value. That is a demanding price against the €43–45bn FY2026 sales guide, even before resolving currency differences, and it means merely delivering the upgraded year is insufficient.

Levels and triggers. Hold at the $1,733.48 price as of 2026-08-10. The call moves to ACCUMULATE if bookings and backlog establish double-digit FY2027 sales growth while gross margin remains at or above 55% and High-NA gains additional production qualifications. It moves to TRIM if two consecutive quarters produce book-to-bill below 1 alongside leading-edge customer capex cuts. The thesis is broken by a cut to the €43–45bn FY2026 sales or 54–56% gross-margin ranges that cannot be explained by shipment timing, or by failure to secure further High-NA production qualifications through FY2027.

Horizon. This HOLD is underwritten over 12–18 months from 2026-08-12, with the next quarterly bookings print and FY2027 commentary carrying more decision value than one quarter’s revenue timing.

The bear case. The strongest objection is that AI infrastructure spending is being capitalised too far forward. Foundry and memory customers can delay tool acceptance even while keeping long-run node plans intact; at this valuation, a temporary bookings air pocket can cause a permanent-looking multiple reset. Export restrictions and customer concentration add downside that monopoly economics cannot eliminate.

What I’m watching: the next net-bookings figure, explicit FY2027 growth commentary, and the next customer production qualification for High-NA.
