Axelrod Research — AMD: Anthropic Puts MI450 on the Map, But "Up To" Means "Up To"
AMD closed the Anthropic deal this week — up to $5 billion in equity, up to 2 gigawatts of MI450 GPUs, and Claude committing to optimize for ROCm. It is the largest AI-lab commitment AMD has ever announced. But the words "up to" appear four times in the press release for a reason, and AMD's cash pile is $5.6 billion. This is a validation of the thesis, not a reason to chase.
AMD — HOLD
Why now: On July 22, AMD announced a strategic partnership with Anthropic that includes an equity investment of up to $5 billion and a deployment of up to 2 GW of Instinct MI450-series GPUs, with the first gigawatt targeted for H1 2027. Anthropic will optimize Claude for AMD hardware and accelerate ROCm development. The deal was confirmed by AMD's own IR press release.
This matters because it is the first time a top-tier AI lab (Anthropic ranks behind OpenAI and DeepMind, but ahead of most) has made a multiyear, multibillion-dollar bet on AMD's AI stack. Every prior AMD data-center GPU win has been smaller, episodic, or from second-tier customers. Anthropic changes the peer perception of ROCm from "CUDA also-ran" to "credible alternative."
The evidence: AMD's Q1 FY2026 revenue was $10,253 million with operating income of $1,476 million (14.4% margin) and cash of $5,585 million. The company is fabless — TSMC manufactures the chips — so the $5 billion is going into a private equity stake, not capex. Anthropic is private, so there is no liquidity and no mark-to-market until an IPO or a subsequent round. The MI450 series uses MI455X GPUs paired with EPYC Venice CPUs and Pensando networking, all AMD-owned IP.
The stock closed at $521.95 on Friday.
Levels & triggers: - Hold if you already own it. The deal validates the long-term AI-compute diversification thesis. - Do not add at these levels. A $5 billion ceiling commitment against $5.6 billion in cash is aggressive. If Anthropic's funding needs or AMD's own cash flow shift, the "up to" becomes a "less than." - Trim if the stock runs above $580 on deal hype without a firm (non-"up to") order confirmation. - Add on a pullback below $450 if the deal is still on track and MI455X silicon is sampling on schedule.
Horizon: 12–18 months. The first GW deployment is H1 2027. Anything before that is narrative.
The bear case: NVIDIA does not stand still. Blackwell is shipping now, Rubin is on the roadmap, and CUDA's software moat is a decade deep. Anthropic's "optimization" for ROCm is a promise, not a product. If Claude-on-MI450 underperforms Claude-on-H100 by even 15% on throughput or 20% on time-to-train, Anthropic will quietly shift workloads back to NVIDIA and treat AMD as a hedge. The $5 billion equity stake then becomes an expensive options contract on a chip that never hits volume.
JPMorgan — HOLD
Q2 earnings were genuinely strong — revenue $58.0 billion (+27% YoY), CIB revenue +27%, equity markets trading +86%, investment-banking fees +30%. But the newsletter headline said "$21.2 billion net income" and "$7.70 EPS" without noting the $5.6 billion in one-time gains ($4.6 billion Visa stake monetization + $1.0 billion equity investment gains). Ex-items, EPS was $6.14 and net income was $16.9 billion. The underlying business is healthy — ROTCE 23% ex-items, CET1 14.1%, payments revenue at a record — but anyone quoting the headline numbers without the asterisk is selling you a story. Hold. The bank is fine; the noise is in the quoting.
Alphabet — HOLD
The same newsletter claimed Alphabet's stake in Anthropic is now worth $94 billion. No source was cited, and the math does not work. Alphabet invested roughly $300 million early plus $2 billion committed in 2023. Anthropic's last known valuation was ~$18–20 billion. For Alphabet's stake to be worth $94 billion, Anthropic would need to be valued at $300–900 billion depending on ownership percentage — larger than NVIDIA. No evidence supports this. The $0.22 quarterly dividend is real (ex-div Sept 4/8, payable Sept 14–15), but the $94 billion figure appears to be back-of-envelope speculation. Hold for the search/cloud cash engine; ignore the Anthropic stake hype until a primary source appears.
Meta — WATCH
Confirmed as the anchor tenant for BlackRock's $12 billion data center campus in El Paso, Texas — one of the largest data-center financings ever. This is consistent with Meta's disclosed $60–65 billion 2026 capex guidance. The newsletter mentioned META only in passing as part of the BlackRock bond story, not as a standalone thesis. The real question is whether Meta is leasing, buying, or joint-venturing the facility — the structure matters for balance-sheet risk. Q2 earnings are due late July. Watch for the capex trajectory and any signs that the $60–65 billion guidance is a ceiling rather than a floor.
What I'm watching
- AMD Q2 earnings (late July / early August): MI300X revenue run-rate, data-center segment growth, and any update on the Anthropic investment phasing.
- Meta Q2 earnings: Capex guidance confirmation and El Paso project structure.
- Alphabet Q2 earnings: Cloud revenue growth and whether management addresses the Anthropic stake mark-to-market.
