The last days of summer
Summer is at a close, I see some leaves have already turned yellow from the window in front of me as I write. This is probably the last weekend one can spend outdoors without warm clothes in Berlin.
I’ve grown to love summer ever since I first moved to Bangalore, and then to Berlin specially. The lower temperatures and humidity just make it so energising, and positive. Specially coming out of a long winter.
I couldn’t say the same about Delhi though. It was nearly the opposite, if not completely. The only thing I liked, or rather loved about summer there was when it ended with Monsoon.
And before that, mangoes, and the variety of it. I have such distinct memories of mangoes from my childhood, it feels it was just yesterday.
There is one I wrote about in a previous issue. There is another, where we would receive a carton or a peti (a wooden crate) of mangoes almost every year. Not every single year, but almost. These were often the fibrous variety which were best eaten by sucking in the flesh from a small opening at the top instead of cutting an eating. They were often ripe and not well suited for the fridge temperatures, so they would be put in a bucket of colder water out in the small courtyard and were finished in a day or two of frenzied mango eating.
I ate them, but they were never my favourite; those were the Langda, Dusehri, and Chaunsa. Every kid has a food that they reach for to buy as soon as they have some money (or at least that used to be the case in the older days). For me, it was the mango.
Anyway, summer is at a close, the sun won’t stay out much more. I should head outside. It is the last summer of my 30s.

Not fiction, but I have this on my shelf for about a year and I think I will still wait for a bit of winter to read this book.
