Productivity software for creative brains
Systems work doesn't inherently cater to people who stray away from linear thinking.
All of my blog posts, newsletters, and 1-1 emails are written by me — em dashes and all! If you wanna know how I use AI in my business, click here.
Nothing is more frustrating to me than making absolutes in the name of productivity. It's one of the reasons I'm so passionate about the work I do with Type C Creative.
Systems work doesn't inherently cater to people who stray away from linear thinking.
Most of my clients work in creative fields: writers, designers, artists, and entertainers. People come to me feeling disorganized or administratively less than because, in a lot of cases, the way their brains work hasn't been celebrated in “traditional” professional settings. We are taught from a young age that organized, structured people are the most successful. And that stigma follows us even when we become our own bosses.
One of my favorite Instagram follows Coming Up Roses says she has a “squiggle brain,” which I find very relatable and endearing. “Squiggle brains” don't necessarily travel from point A to point B to point C when approaching projects.
There aren't many productivity software out there that cater to the squiggly brains. Because society tends to view productivity as a squiggle-free zone, the tools we're told to use to achieve it can feel a bit stifling.
In my experience, I've found a lot of highly creative people are drawn to platforms that are:
Simple - no unnecessary bells and whistles
Intuitive - easy to catch on to and make your own
Aesthetically pleasing - doesn't look like it was made in the early 2000s
Here are some of my 'squiggly' platform recommendations:
WillowSpace. WillowSpace is a CRM that was created by and for designers. Unlike other platforms like Dubsado and Honeybook, WillowSpace is both customizable and extremely simple in nature (it's also not ugly 🙌🏽).
Milanote. Milanote is like Evernote but … squiggly. I'm so obsessed with it, I think I may like it more than Notion (shhh, don't tell anyone!). It makes planning and organizing projects much more visual. Super intuitive and simple, yet so many use cases. Pinterest wishes.
Notion. My tried and true. I've been talking about this platform since the day I launched Type C and I still adore it. I recently helped a friend build a simple site using Notion and Super to sell social media templates. Check it out. The possibilities are endless!
Google Tasks. I have tried every task management tool under the sun, but unfortunately I always forget to look at it lol #adhdbrain. I check my Google Calendar religiously and it's so helpful having all my tasks at the top of my calendar. (Now I only have to worry about procrastination, not forgetfulness.) There is no physical app needed outside of Google Calendar, so I never miss it.
Anything else I should add to the list?
Peace, love and workflows,
Andrea
