Adam Goldman here. The web series guy? The Outs and whatnot?
It's been a minute, I know.

As someone who supported my work at a very early stage, for which I will always be grateful, I want to tell you about a nonprofit project I’ve launched in collaboration with Alan Cumming, Bowen Yang and Lena Waithe. It’s called the Necessary Foundation.

We are in a precarious, upsetting moment both politically and culturally. The trouble extends deep into the film and television industry, where old prejudices are strengthened by a resurgent conservatism that is pushing marginalized people out of media, both on-screen and off. According to GLAAD’s annual Studio Responsibility Index report, American media is backsliding, erasing LGBT+ characters and, critically, creators.

Without intervention,
a generation of queer filmmakers will be lost.

So. We’re intervening.

By providing financial support, mentorship, and on-set experience to first-time LGBT+ filmmakers, the Necessary Foundation will ensure that queer creators have a future in the TV and film industry.

Our focus right now is on raising $60,000 to fund our first three grants, giving three LGBT+ filmmakers the opportunity to make work from their hearts, without notes, executives or limits. The same opportunity that, if you’re reading this, you once gave me.
