Theoretiquette is Leaving Substack

Dear subscribers,

You may have noticed I haven’t sent a newsletter in some time. That’s simply because I haven’t had the time to do so. I got a new job and also am just languishing in the morass of pandemic-writers-block. This is all unrelated to why I’m leaving Substack.

Some of you may know this, but for those who don’t, Substack has grown to be a valuable tool for writers looking to communicate directly with their readers. It offers options to have special paid subscriber content in a pretty simple platform, so some writers are even able to make a living off of Substack subscriptions, much like Patreon. It was launched in 2018 and grew a strong base thanks to writers like Daniel Lavery and Nicole Cliffe. Which is to say, it owes much of its success to trans people and women.

Which is why it’s especially disheartening that Substack is now choosing to center the voices of notable transphobic and misogynistic writers like Jesse Singal, Glenn Greenwald, and Freddie de Boer. For more information on what all I’m talking about, please see Jude Doyle’s much more thoughtful and thorough accounting of the events in their recent post.

All of that to say–especially since I currently don’t have a paid-subscriber portion of this newsletter, and I am rarely updating it anyway–I will no longer be publishing Theoretiquette through Substack. I’m still considering my options as far as alternatives, but when the time comes, I will either export my subscriber list to wherever I decide on, or send another message to let you know where to find me, so no action is necessary on your part at this time.

I appreciate you subscribing to this newsletter and hope to revive it soon, somewhere else. In the meantime, feel free to submit your “etiquette” questions on my website and maybe someday soon, you’ll get an answer.

With love and appreciation,

T.L. Pavlich

P.S. For my US subscribers, Daylight Savings Time begins overnight, so here is your pedantic reminder that until November, you should be using [E/C/M/P]DT whenever you indicate time zones, if you do not want to incur my wrath. Learn more here.
