Etymology. Named after Lord Stanley of Preston, Governor General of Canada, who first presented it in 1893. The only trophy that doubles as a mobile party centerpiece.

He stood in awe before the thiccc Stanley Cup, its metallic girth mirrored in the glass like a silver monolith. The trophy case seemed like an afterthought.
