1. A tall, freestanding pendulum clock housed in a wooden case, typically six to eight feet high, its lower cabinet built wide enough to conceal a full-length swinging pendulum and a pair of hanging iron weights.
2. colloq. Furniture that ticks, chimes on the hour, and cannot be relocated by fewer than two people and a hand truck.
Etymology. Descends from the 17th-century English longcase clock, renamed after an 1876 song about one that stopped forever the moment its owner died. The song made the nickname permanent. The girth was never optional to begin with.
The grandfather clock in the hallway was so thiccc it took three movers and a dolly to get it through the front door.
