Canterbury Snow Outlook — a few low-chance windows to watch across the next fortnight
Canterbury Snow Outlook
The 14-day picture — the days worth watching.
Issued Monday 20 July 2026, 07:58 NZST · Outlook period next 14 days
The first half of the week looks clear, but a cluster of low-chance snow windows opens from Saturday and recurs into early August.
Tomorrow through Friday the picture is quiet — no meaningful snow signal on the hills or the plains, and nothing worth acting on. The first window worth watching arrives Saturday, where current guidance puts a low chance of snow on the hills at around 21–22%, with a lower but still notable chance reaching the plains. Sunday and Monday (27th) carry the signal forward at slightly reduced odds — around 18% and 12% on the hills respectively — so this looks like a multi-day window rather than a single sharp event. All three days are flagged as worth watching, but to be clear: these are low chances, the minority outcome at this range, and the guidance has been stable rather than building.
Beyond that cluster, Tuesday (28th) and Wednesday (29th) drop back to noise. Friday (31st) then picks up again with a low chance on the hills — around 11–12% — enough for a watch flag but firmly in the keep-an-eye-on category. The tail end of the window, Sunday (2nd) and Monday (3rd), shows a similar low-level signal, with Monday (3rd) the slightly stronger of the two at around 15% on the hills.
In summary: nothing imminent, and none of these windows is a high-confidence event. Saturday is the strongest single day in the fortnight, but even there the chance sits just above one-in-five on the hills. Worth keeping an eye on as the week progresses, but no need to act on it yet.
