A) It's a double decker (two layers of filling between three slices of bread). A standard sandwich is a single-decker sandwich, not a double-decker.

B) An NJ sloppy joe shouldn't have swiss cheese, and ones that do are an abomination.

C) Although a lot of places in Millburn claim to have invented it, I believe the late Seymour Tabatchnik's claim to the sandwich

D) It should be cut into triangles, not squares

E) The number of meats vary, but my favorite sloppy joe is turkey, roast beef, and corned beef or pastrami with coleslaw and Russian dressing, as a double-decker, on very thin seedless rye. My family would get a platter of these tall triangular, toothpicked sandwiches every New Year's Eve, and it would come as a wreath of tall triangles around a tub of sour and half-sour pickles.
