The Sunday Sol · What Madrid Should Teach Us

On Friday, a wildfire drove NASA's people out of one of the three places on Earth where we can talk to spacecraft in deep space.

The whole time it was burning, satellites were watching it.

That sentence is the entire argument I want to make today, so let me say it more plainly. The fire that reached the Madrid Deep Space Communications Complex was detected from orbit, tracked from orbit, and mapped from orbit — by a fleet of Earth-observing spacecraft built by the same industry, and often the same agencies, that own the antennas the fire threatened. We watched it come. We have gotten extraordinarily good at watching. What we have not yet decided is whether we're going to keep paying for the ability.

What happened at Robledo de Chavela

About 65 kilometers west of Madrid, in the town of Robledo de Chavela, sit six Deep Space Network antennas, including a 70-meter dish. On July 24, wildfires forced the complex to evacuate — roughly 90 workers, per Canal 24 Horas. The entire town was evacuated too. A NASA spokesperson said it without decoration: "The wildfire has passed through the MDSCC." Everyone got out. The damage assessment can't begin until it's safe to walk the site.

Zoom out and the numbers stop being about NASA at all. More than 267,000 people have been evacuated across Spain and France. Spain declared a national emergency and put 2,737 personnel, 426 ground vehicles and 21 aircraft into the field, joined by crews sent from Greece, Italy and Portugal. Two fires west of Madrid merged into one and burned roughly 30 square kilometers, forcing out 18,000 people. Another near Ávila took 90 square kilometers.

I keep thinking about the ordinary shape of that. Somebody at Robledo saved their coworkers and their site and then drove home to a town that was also being evacuated. There is no version of this where the space story is separate from the human one.

The machine that was watching

Here is what most people never see, and what I think is genuinely one of the great quiet achievements of the last fifty years.

When a fire starts in Europe, a chain of spacecraft picks it up. Geostationary weather satellites see the thermal signature and the smoke within minutes. Polar-orbiting instruments — VIIRS on the American side, the Copernicus Sentinels on the European side — resolve where the front actually is. Then, when a government asks, the Copernicus Emergency Management Service activates and starts producing damage-assessment maps from Sentinel-2 imagery and handing them to the people holding hoses.

That's not hypothetical this summer. It's a log. Sierra de Alcubierre in Aragón, June 30. I want to be precise about why this is the good version of a space program. Nobody at Copernicus is doing anything glamorous. There is no crew. The output is a PDF of a burn perimeter that an incident commander in Castilla y León uses to decide which road to hold. The entire value is that it arrives fast, it's accurate, and it costs the person using it nothing.

The record is the point

The maps tell you where the fire is. The archive tells you why there are so many of them.

Copernicus Climate Change Service recorded June 2026 as the hottest June on record for western Europe and the second-warmest globally — 1.39°C above the estimated pre-industrial average, riding the highest sea surface temperatures ever measured for the month. Europe has now taken three distinct heatwaves since late May. Italy hit 48.4°C at Casteltermini on July 18. France hit 44.3°C at Pissos in June, and in the French region now burning, July highs have averaged 7.3°C above normal.

None of those are opinions. They are measurements, and the reason they're trustworthy is boring and crucial: they come from instruments that have been cross-calibrated against each other for decades. World Weather Attribution's finding — that fossil fuel emissions have rapidly worsened European heatwaves in just a few decades, such that a weather pattern that would once have produced an uncomfortable week now produces a lethal one — is only possible because someone maintained an unbroken measurement series long enough to compare against.

You cannot detect a trend with a snapshot. That is the whole discipline. A climate record is not a pile of images; it's a continuous, calibrated, overlapping chain, and its scientific value is not linear in its length — it's closer to exponential. Break the chain and you don't lose a year of data. You lose the ability to say anything confident about the years on either side of the gap.

Which is why the next three years matter enormously

The FY2026 budget request proposed terminating 55 operating NASA missions and cutting Earth science funding by more than half. Appropriators in both the House and the Senate rejected that, holding NASA science near $7.3 billion, and the Senate committee named Terra, Aqua and Aura specifically for continuation. Their reasoning is worth quoting in spirit: NASA already runs Senior Reviews, where working scientists judge whether a spacecraft still earns its operating cost. That judgment, the committee said, belongs to the scientists, not to a budget office.

I think that was the right call, and I'd rather note that it was reached by both chambers than score points about who proposed what.

But here's the part that should actually worry us, and it's the reason I'm writing this instead of a victory lap: Congress can stop a satellite from being switched off. It cannot stop one from running out of power.

Terra, Aqua and Aura are the flagships of the Earth Observing System. Between them they have been taking the planet's temperature, watching its ozone, and — through the MODIS instrument — detecting its fires for over two decades. They are also drifting out of their designed orbits, and NASA projects end-of-science for Terra in February 2027, Aqua in September 2027, and Aura in August 2028. MODIS data collection is expected to cease in late 2026 or early 2027, with the fire-detection workload transitioning to VIIRS.

That transition is happening whether or not anyone votes on it. And it is exactly the moment where a 25-year record either gets carefully bridged — with overlapping observations, cross-calibration, and reprocessing — or gets quietly fractured. Bridging costs money and attention now, before the old instrument dies, and never after. There is no retroactive overlap.

So the ask isn't "save the satellites." The satellites are, in the most literal sense, beyond saving; they're old and they've earned their retirement. The ask is continuity — fund the successors, fund the overlap, fund the unglamorous calibration work that makes the next 25 years comparable to the last 25.

The ground segment is on Earth

We build spacecraft to survive vacuum, radiation, and thermal cycling that would destroy anything terrestrial. And then the entire enterprise routes through buildings on hillsides in California, Australia and Spain, which are subject to fire, flood, wind, and heat like every other building.

This week the fire won a round against one of them. Goldstone picked up Madrid's traffic, every deep space mission kept flying, and the system held. But it held by spending margin, and it should register with all of us that a climate-driven disaster just reached in and touched the infrastructure we use to listen to Voyager.

Crews from Greece, Italy and Portugal drove to Spain because Spain asked. That instinct — that a fire in someone else's country is your problem too — is the same instinct that built Copernicus and the same one that makes NASA and ESA data free to anyone on Earth who needs it. It's the best thing this industry does. I'd like us to keep deserving it.

The people at Robledo de Chavela got out safely. What I want, when they go back, is for them to find the antennas standing — and for the satellites overhead that watched the whole thing to have successors already being built.
