A privately built Indian rocket punched into orbit for the first time, a robotic mechanic began a slow climb toward the geostationary belt, the world's biggest rocket finally got a second try, and 48 light-years away we caught a rocky world holding onto an atmosphere. It was one of those weeks where the future arrives in four different accents at once. Here's what happened.

🇮🇳 India's first private rocket reaches orbit
On Saturday, Skyroot Aerospace's Vikram-1 lifted off from Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota — and about 15 minutes later it was in a 450-kilometer orbit, making Skyroot the first private company to reach orbit from Indian soil and India only the third nation, after the U.S. and China, with a privately built orbital launcher. The four-stage rocket ran three solid motors and then a liquid "orbit adjustment module" that burned for roughly six minutes to circularize. It carried Skyroot's own SCOPE instrument to grade the flight, plus two charmingly symbolic payloads — an 18-karat gold rocket and a lab-grown-diamond "Cosmic Bloom." A T-minus-5-minute glitch held the count 35 minutes; then it flew clean. This is the visible payoff of six years of Indian reforms opening orbital launch to private builders alongside ISRO, and it's the kind of debut most rockets don't get on the first try.

🛰️ A mechanic starts the long climb to GEO
On Tuesday, a Falcon 9 lofted Northrop Grumman's MRV-1 — the Mission Robotic Vehicle I flagged last week as the one I couldn't stop thinking about — along with three Mission Extension Pods, from Cape Canaveral's SLC-40. This is the on-orbit servicer built around DARPA's RSGS program, carrying a pair of robotic arms built by the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory. The plan: fly up to aging geostationary satellites, bolt on a fresh propulsion "pod," and buy them years of extra life — repair and refueling as a business model rather than a demo. The lift to geostationary transfer was demanding enough that booster B1069 was expended on its 32nd and final flight. MRV-1 now begins a slow cruise, reaching the GEO belt around mid-2027, where the actual grappling begins.

🚀 Starship gets its second try
After Flight 13's dramatic T-0 self-abort on July 16 — when four of the Super Heavy booster's Raptor 3 engines wouldn't light and the flight computer correctly stopped everything — SpaceX spent days swapping and re-testing engines, waved off a July 23 attempt for weather, and rolled Starship back to the pad for a Friday, July 24 launch window opening at 2245 UTC. This is the second flight of the taller Version 3 vehicle and the headline is the cargo: the first-ever Starlink V3 satellites, twenty of them, six carrying cameras to beam live views of the ship's heat shield home. It's a suborbital test, so the satellites ride the ship's arc back down and burn up rather than staying up; the booster targets a splashdown in the Gulf and the ship a soft landing in the Indian Ocean. As I write this, Flight 13 is finally underway — worth watching the replay for how those V3 birds deploy.

🔭 An atmosphere on a habitable-zone world
The quietest story might be the biggest. Writing in Science, a team led by the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian reported the first strong evidence of an atmosphere on a rocky planet inside its star's habitable zone — LHS 1140 b, a super-Earth about 48 light-years away, some 1.7 times Earth's radius. They caught helium escaping the planet, a telltale sign it's holding onto gas rather than sitting bare like so many other rocky worlds around small red stars. With an equilibrium temperature around a mild 47 °C, LHS 1140 b jumps to the front of the line for the question the whole field is circling: can a small, rocky planet in the right orbit keep an atmosphere long enough for anything interesting to happen? This is the strongest "yes, maybe" we've had.
