Sometimes I wake up in the middle of dreaming, and if anybody was saying anything in my dream, their words will still be in my ears even though I am now (sort of) awake.

When I woke up one morning recently, some guy in my dream (kind of a nondescript guy in a hat who maybe resembled Bob Odenkirk?) was saying the words: “These five minutes…” and even though I was now awake I kept hearing that.

It sounded like some kind of reminder of what time we actually have in our grasp, which is immediately around us, and how that bit is where everything happens.

So that day I tried using that phrase to bring myself back out of orbit, since I am mentally in orbit a lot, and honestly it gets pretty frustrating. It is difficult to accomplish anything from orbit.

Those words were actually quite helpful! They kept me in the game in terms of actually doing things and not just thinking about them, which I find can be such a dangerous time-wasting activity and also a way that you can miss out on experience and not even know this is happening. Pondering is nice, but it’s especially neat when you go out the door or make the thing or call the friend.

So thanks, nondescript man in a hat who maybe resembled Bob Odenkirk.
