The King of Santa Fe Session Ten

Sheriff Fletcher calls Cody in; he needs Cody to take a lead on this missing person. He needs an answer to where Howard Ross has gone. Fletcher passes over an itinerary of the sites, mines and a logging camp that Ross had planned to visit. He tells Cody that Ross went with a couple of his men, but no one has seen head nor tail of them.

Cody gathers together the group, his informal posse, to help with the investigation. They head up into the Elk Mountains to check off the first mine on the itinerary, and they realise with a shock that it is Daan Solo’s mine. Ross has already tried to buy Daan’s mine. Why is he visiting it?

At first glance, when they reach the mine, nothing has changed. Daan hasn’t had the time or money to work on it, but closer inspection shows the boarded-up entrance has been disturbed. Planks have been removed, and there are traces of blood on the floor. Winston and Dutch head inside, lighting a lantern, and move deeper into the mine. They see a body at the bottom of a shaft. Climbing down, they find a dead Howard Ross, that fall would have been enough to kill him, but there are other marks on his head, scratched knuckles and his gun beside him. Could this be foul play?

Did someone kill Ross?

Diago contemplates taking the $500 Ross had on him, but the others suggest leaving the body untouched and returning it to town, letting Sheriff Fletcher decide. No sign of anyone else here, or Ross’ horse.

Back in town, Fletcher is horrified at seeing the body of Ross, and he calls Dr Innes, who also suggests that murder cannot be ruled out, though it’s not 100% clear. Fletcher suggests they sleep on it and then head over to The Brooklyn Hotel, where the Ross boys are staying.

Cody remembers the Pinkertons, or supposed Pinkertons, that were seen in town. Fletcher goes white and suggests it’s something else for Cody to check into, but as far as he is aware, no Pinkertons have passed through this way - the man they think is a Pinkerton is staying at The Grand Hotel.

Cody decides to grab a drink at the Grand Hotel, Winston, Dutch and Daan will observe and come in later if backup is needed. Diago moseys on over to The Mexico City Saloon to talk to his friend Francisco.

Cody wanders into the bar at the Grand, the “Pinkerton” has clocked him and watches his every step as Cody goes to the bar, grabs a drink and heads on over. Cody nods and sits down opposite the man. The man introduces himself as Friar, a mining equipment salesman, and he thinks he’s onto a good thing at Steaming Rock. Cody asks point-blank if he is a Pinkerton, but he says no. He asks in return if they’ve found Ross. Cody says no. They both smile. Friar asks another question: Does Cody know Daan Solo? He needs to talk with him. Cody says yes, and he can pass on a message. Friar stands, tips his hat and heads up to his room, “There is no need, I’m going to catch up with Mr Solo.” Cody gets a cold shiver down his spine; there is a feeling that this person is much more than just a simple mining salesman.

Diago chats with Francisco. Francisco looks worried about the Pinkertons, “They only turn up when the shit’s about to rain down.” Diago tells him about Ross's death. Francisco looks doubly worried, “The whole town could be turned upside down, my friend. Don’t worry about god, keep your gun near.”

Cody and the others catch up, swapping tales, then they retreat to their homes. Winston, now the part-owner of The Homestead Inn, surveys the scene at his business. It’s a mess. William Moyer is letting his friends rent rooms for free, and they have long bar bills. Winston wonders what he’s got himself mixed up in.

The next morning, the posse and Fletcher wander over to The Brooklyn Hotel, bumping into Smokey and a few of Ross’ men coming in the opposite direction. Smokey smoothes out his droopy moustache, “I hear from the Mexican Ross is dead. Now you're gonna tell me what the hell is happening, Sheriff.”

Stuttering from Fletcher, why is he so nervous? Then he gains control, “Okay, come see the body, still working through what happened, but likely an accident up at Solo’s mine.”

In the Sheriff’s office, Smokey looks at the body, “That ain’t no mining accident, look at his head, pistol whipped, and Ross knew his way around a mine blindfold.” He looks at Solo, “I heard he was up at your mine to make you an offer, guess you didn’t take kindly to it.” Then he turns to Winston, “Or maybe you, looking for revenge, did it!?”

Daan smiles, “Hold on to your moustache, fella…” At this, Smokey swings a punch, knocking Daan down, before Dutch leaps in and grabs Smokey in a bear hug until his anger dissipates.

Daan goes down

Cody takes charge, asking to speak with the men who accompanied Ross - Billy and Clayton. It turns out they were both sick, they’d gone for a meal at Rockcliffe’s, and the next day were puking their guts out; they were supposed to have met Ross at Daan’s mine. Rockcliffe came over to see them, told them not to worry, he’d send a couple of his boys to meet with Ross.
