A song for every emotion ...
Dragonbane has some cool Heroic Abilities. My mallard, Moggie, has a few of them - Ill-tempered, when angry he gets advantage on attacks, he has to take the Angry condition though, which means Intelligence saves are at disadvantage. He's also Fleet footed so can evade attacks as a free action. Lastly, he's a Musician who can inspire his fellows, giving them an advantage, or strike fear into his enemies giving opponents a disadvantage.
All of these require a spend of willpower points to activate, I have seventeen and they cost three points per ability activation, so I can invoke these five times in a battle.
The Musician ability is my favourite, when triggered it inspires or strikes fear until my next round, if I can do this when I'm first of the party to go and then next round swap to the end of initiative, it will give my fellows two turns with advantage, this could be a combat attack, a parry, an evade, a save versus some special monster ability or even a death save.
This all came to the fore in a desperate battle against a Basilisk. The party were getting hit by up to three very powerful attacks each round, some of the attacks gave constant damage, others were only a saving throw from death. Myself and our other mallard, Bill, had got in a few good strikes but not without the whole party taking some serious damage. A few rounds later, the Basilisk was looking rough but Devis and an NPC were down, then Bill went down due to the accumulated effects of poison and damage. I started playing a rousing tune on my flute, helping Bill, Devis and the NPC survive death rolls and rally, a few more hits pierced the hide of the beast. We started a new round and I luckily rolled low, being first in the initiative order and decided to swap my position with the last to go in the party. This continued the effects of my Musicianship into a second round and finally Couttar got in the killing blow. As a fitting reward a set of Bagpipes were found and given to Moggee, this gave some further bonuses on range and reduced spend of this ability.
Afterwards our GM, thought he should check on the usage of this ability, in particular if it can stretch across rounds. But he admitted the way it's written it suggests it can be used this way and probably without it we'd all be dead! So a clever use of an epic ability in and showing again how well thought out Dragonbane is when it comes to balancing out these tactical Heroic Abilities. With thought many of them can be used to a powerful effect and turn the tide in desperate circumstances.
