What Northern Virginia is talking about before 9am
🚨 What Everyone’s Talking About
  • Fairfax supervisors restored crossing guards after a three-hour hearing. The Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to allocate $707,908 and 11 full-time police positions to cover 11 crossings at 10 high schools for the rest of the fiscal year. The vote followed a rally outside the government center and testimony from dozens of residents. FFXnow

  • Arlington's County Board voted to pull the plug on Flock cameras. The board directed the county manager to discontinue its 41 Flock Safety cameras and begin removing the equipment. Chair Matt de Ferranti cited resident concerns about the license plate reader technology, noting no misuse has been reported. ARLnow

  • The Kennedy Center board voted to close the venue. The board voted Tuesday to shutter the performing arts center amid financial troubles and a fight over adding President Trump's name to the building. A federal judge had blocked the board from installing Trump's name earlier that day. ARLnow via AP

🏛️ Policy & Power
  • A former Falls Church youth minister faces federal child sex abuse charges. Jeffrey Turner Taylor, 66, served as a youth minister at The Falls Church from 1990 to 2002 and now lives in Ohio. • De Ferranti wants Richmond to stay out of Arlington's government-change debate. The County Board chair said at a Sept. 9 forum that he hopes Del. Patrick Hope does not refile governance-change legislation in 2027. He wants the local community to set the terms first. ARLnow

🚓 Safety & Weirdness
  • Deaths in Virginia prisons climbed as the inmate population ages. A new state report found 111 people died in state prisons in 2025, up from 97 the year before. The median age of those who died was 63, a trend one analyst tied to lengthy sentences handed down decades ago. WTOP

  • Route 9 and Route 287 in Loudoun becomes a roundabout Thursday. Starting Sept. 17, the existing signal goes dark and drivers navigate a single-lane traffic circle. The configuration stays until the project wraps in early 2027. Loudoun County

🏗️ Money, Jobs & Development
  • A 41-acre Centreville office park could give way to housing. Stanley Martin Homes and JLB Partners filed a rezoning application offering two options for the Trinity Centre office park: up to 737 units or up to 1,098 units. Both plans mix apartments, condos and townhomes with public park space. FFXnow

  • A new realtors report finds no national "data center effect" on housing. The National Association of Realtors says only 251 of 3,220 U.S. counties host data centers, keeping the issue tightly clustered. Loudoun and Prince William together account for 19% of all data centers nationwide. WTOP

  • The Chocolate Palette opens its own Leesburg storefront Thursday. Owner Cheryl June moves the dessert shop into 212A Loudoun Street SE, a few doors from Mom's Apple Pie. The menu features European sipping chocolates and Danish æbleskivers. The Burn

🧭 Regional Mood

Two boards met Tuesday and both chose to take something away: Fairfax gave crossing guards back after cutting them, Arlington yanked the cameras it once defended. The reversals share a rhythm; residents show up, keep showing up, and the room eventually blinks.

That's the briefing. Look out for each other out there. See you tomorrow.
